Ako Aotearoa launches Tapatoru: A new professional development framework for Tertiary Education Organisations

29 April 2022

This week Ako Aotearoa brings a brand-new initiative to the tertiary sector that will help Tertiary Education Organisations (TEO’s) build capability across their entire organisation.

Named the Tapatoru Ako Professional Practice Award, this professional development framework is a powerful reflective practice tool that promotes values-based teaching – organisation-wide. Its main purpose is to foster a professional learning culture within organisations, and, through the Awards process, recognise teaching staff who meet the standards for professional knowledge, practice, and values.

Developed by Ako Aotearoa’s Adult Literacy, Numeracy and Cultural Capability team, Tapatoru is intended for all TEO’s, and for teaching and learning support staff at all programme levels – from foundation to higher education.

It provides an organisational approach to capability building where organisations register to undertake the Award process for a monthly subscription. The process is a collaborative one where groups of staff work together over 2-6 months, with Ako Aotearoa’s Tapatoru facilitators tailoring an individual professional learning pathway to best suit their needs. This culminates with staff submitting a portfolio of evidence to show the growth in their practice. Once 80% of an organisation’s staff have achieved the Tapatoru Individual Award, their organisation can receive the Tapatoru Organisation Award.
