Understand NZQA’s Principles of Assessment, develop assessment design skills by applying a best practice assessment framework to critically evaluate and refine assessments tasks.

Course outline

This course takes place online over three weeks and includes three one-hour, online Zoom sessions. In total, this course should take an average of six hours of learning over three weeks.

This interactive course will include facilitated discussion, small group activities, and access to online content.

Topics covered

Assessment is an essential part of learning; it determines whether or not educational outcomes for students are being met. Teachers in tertiary education need to have a comprehensive understanding of assessment and its frameworks. This includes interpretation and application of standards, and methods for designing valid, reliable, flexible and fair assessment covering a range of contexts for diverse learners.

Working with Michael Few, the course participants will develop their assessment design skills, understand the qualities of good assessments, critically analyse case studies, and apply those qualities to assessing the learning outcomes in their teaching.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course participants will:

have a comprehensive understanding of assessment and its framework
be able to interpret and apply standards of assessment
use NZQA's "Principles of Assessment" to critically analyse assessment
refine assessment activities.

Who is this course for?

The course is suitable for tertiary teachers wanting an introduction to the assessment principles and practices of and for student learning for both traditional ‘face-to-face’ and ‘online’ deliveries.

It will also be valuable for workplace trainers, moderators or resource developers who are responsible for leading the design, implementation and review of assessments.

About the facilitator

Michael Few has worked for the last three years as Learning Advisor with a focus on research, development and the implementation of contemporary change initiatives. Prior to his current role, Michael was a Programme Leader and taught on the Certificate in Adult Teaching (Advanced) Level 5 qualification in the ITP sector. He was also a Lead Coach for an initiative to improve the success for adult Māori learners, based on Professor Russell Bishop's Te Kotahitanga - Effective Teaching Profile.

Michael’s interests and expertise include professional teacher development in the areas of culturally responsive pedagogy, assessment and the application of technology in teaching. He enjoys working as a mentor and coach to other teaching colleagues.
