Course outline

This is a three-week online course where participants will plan an engaging, learner-centred session for either online or face-to-face learning environments, that aims to meet SMART learning outcomes. 

Participants are expected to complete a minimum of three hours work each week at times suitable to them.  

This course builds on our previous Engaging Challenging Learners workshop and What are we going to learn? Writing SMART learning outcomes workshop.

Topics covered

The course covers:

  • lesson planningand parts of a plan 
  • student-centred learning  
  • SMART learning outcomes  
  • including the diverse learner groups in every class.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course participants will be able to: 

  • use Bloom's Taxonomy to write a set of SMART learning outcomes as goals for a teaching and learning session 
  • plan an engaging, learner-centred teaching and learning  session that helps learners meet a set of SMART learning outcomes
  • peer-review lesson plans so they are ready for online or face-to-face delivery.

Who is this course for?

This course will be of value to practitioners who wish to plan engaging, student-centred learning sessions. It will be of interest to new staff in tertiary education and workplace training, and all teachers who are new to planning for online learning.  

About the facilitator

Julia Bruce-Mayne gained her Adult Education degree and then her Master of Education (hons) while teaching hairdressing students for 13 years.

She received an Ako Aotearoa Tertiary Teaching Excellence Award for Sustained Excellence in 2008 and went on to help others extend their teaching practices through roles in Capability Development in the School of Education at Wintec.

She is currently an independent consultant who is passionate about developing teaching and learning through reflective, collaborative and holistic practice.
