About the course
Course outline
This course includes three online workshops, and an optional, four-week, self-paced online module. The module takes a minimum of 1-2 hours of engagement per week.
Participants will have the opportunity to practise and reflect on the new learning and exchange experiences and ideas with each other and the facilitator.
Topics covered
This course presents an introduction to the Literacy and Numeracy for Adults Assessment Tool (LNAAT) and the related Learning Progressions framework. Become familiar with the assessment options available within the LNAAT and how to choose the most appropriate options for your learners. Learn how to introduce and explain the benefits of the LNAAT and assessments to your learners.

- describe the Learning Progressions steps in relation to the LNAAT
- use assessment options available within the LNAAT
- select the most appropriate options for learners
- apply strategies for introducing the LNAAT and assessments to a learner
- identify where to seek support for LNAAT-related mahi and further professional learning and development.

About the facilitator
Michael Grawe
Michael is an experienced educator and is the Professional Learning Manager for Pathways Awarua, where his focus is on literacy and numeracy education. With a Master's Degree in American Literature, Media Studies, and Teaching, Michael has dedicated over 20 years to the education sector, both in Aotearoa and abroad. He has a diverse background, having worked in various roles such as ESOL, Kaiako for Business & Computing, and Advisor for Literacy and Numeracy at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.
Michael has also made significant contributions as a resource developer, facilitator and professional learning consultant at Ako Aotearoa, hosted by Massey University. Passionate about learner success and whānau transformation through education, Michael understands the power of education in driving positive change. He has been instrumental in supporting the professional development of educators and empowering learners to achieve their goals. With his wealth of experience and dedication to educational excellence, he continues to make a significant impact in the field of literacy and numeracy education.
