On the 24th and 25th May, Ako Aotearoa is partnering with the Ministry of Education to host two fono in Te Tai Tokerau with communities across Northland. The fono aim to provide a truly interactive opportunity to share information, ideas and updates that builds the capability of pacific communities and learners across the region. We invite all those in Te Tai Tokerau with an interest in supporting Pacific learners’ success to register at no cost for the Kaitaia event on Monday 24 May or Whangārei event on Tuesday 25.
Le Niu speaks to the strength, sustainability, cultural context, and resource of the coconut tree and therefore encompasses the spirit in which the talanoa kōrero will take place.
Attendees at the fono will include those representing the region’s communities of learning and providers, plus local health and community organisations. We are also encouraging the ‘learner voice’ to be heard by inviting a range of young people and current learners to this important event.
Topics for discussion will be led by the attendees but are likely to include how we can support:
- Pacific learners and families to be free from racism and discrimination in education
- Pacific learners and their families to feel accepted and included
- Pacific learners’ cultures, faith and beliefs are valued in education
- Pacific families to feel confident supporting their children in education
- removing financial barriers to accessing education for Pacific families
- building the Pacific workforce so it is grown, valued and supported.
Ako Aotearoa and the Ministry intend this to be the next step towards building capable and supportive communities across Aotearoa. Ako Aotearoa will be coordinating the delivery of the outcomes of this fono to the Ministry and supporting the timely delivery of next steps of this important talanoa.
The fono will be held from 10 am to 2 pm on Monday 24 May in Kaitaia. A second session will be held from 10 am to 2 pm on Tuesday 25 May in Whangārei. There will be no charge to attend, with refreshments and lunch provided.
