Course outline

This course includes two online workshops, and an optional, four-week, self-paced online module. The module takes a minimum of 1-2 hours of engagement per week.

Participants will have the opportunity to practise and reflect on the new learning and exchange experiences and ideas with each other and the facilitator.

Topics covered

Explore effective reading strategies to transform your learners from passive to active readers. Comprehension is the essence of reading and a tool for lifelong learning. Most of us need to make meaning from text every single day. In doing so, we use strategies without even being aware of it. Teaching these strategies to learners will greatly enhance their reading comprehension.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • explain how reading develops
  • define the importance of teaching reading comprehension
  • use assessment results to inform teaching
  • identify and explain five research-based reading comprehension strategies
  • model and teach these five strategies to your learners
  • apply some culturally responsive pedagogy principles to your teaching.

Who is this course for?

This course is recommended for educators seeking to enhance their understanding and practice.
