About the workshops

Learn more about neurodiversity and neurodivergence, the challenges it can pose for learners, and how to put support in place.

Workshop 1 | Autism | Supporting learner success

Drawing on survey data from autistic tertiary learners and their whānau, as well as published research, Altogether Autism, supported by the Tertiary Education Commission, has created guidelines to help tertiary educators better support their autistic learners.

This workshop will use the guidelines to help participants develop a deeper understanding of the specific challenges autistic tertiary learners face, and explore strategies that can support autistic learners to have a more positive tertiary experience.

Workshop 2 | Dyspraxia | Supporting learner success

Developmental Dyspraxia/Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is a neurological condition which is often misunderstood. It can present in a similar way to other types of neurodiversity, but has a different basis and underlying cause. In this workshop we will look at what may be happening in the brain of your learner with dyspraxia/DCD and explore ways you can support these learners so everyone has a better experience in your teaching and learning space.

Workshop 3 | ADHD | Supporting learner success

ADHD New Zealand, supported by the Tertiary Education Commission, has developed eLearning modules to help tertiary educators better support their learners with ADHD.

This workshop will help participants develop a deeper understanding of the specific challenges tertiary learners with ADHD face, and explore strategies that can support them to have a more positive learning experience.

Workshop 4 | Dyslexia | Fostering metacognitive strategies

Metacognition can be defined as ‘an awareness and understanding of one’s own thought processes’. It can be thought of as ‘knowing how I learn’ and is one of the most impactful strategies for all learners. It is immensely enabling and empowering as it allows learners to take control of their learning. It encourages active learning and keeps learners engaged. In this workshop we will explore how to support learners in developing metacognitive strategies.
