Dr Herb de Vries
Award for Sustained Excellence in Tertiary Teaching
Senior Lecturer, College of Business and Law University of Canterbury
“My students are at the centre of my universe.”
Herb came into an academic role as a second career after many years as a successful small business owner. Utterly student centred, he believes that his role is to inspire his students to set high expectations for themselves and then help them achieve those expectations. Having overcome dyslexia himself, Herb uses a wide range of approaches to support learning. Items in his ‘tool box’ range from wearing a (not very flattering) wig to illustrate change theory, to the use of music in his classes and his popular Café Sessions. He is concerned for the success of every student in his care and extremely supportive of colleagues as well.
Widely recognised for his teaching excellence in the university, Herb “has a chameleon-like ability to blend into the teaching setting” and generate student engagement whatever the class size.
