Inspiring a new generation of passionate, reflective, and work-ready nurses

Kerry Davis is a Principal Lecturer, Nursing, at Otago Polytechnic.

Kerry is an innovative educator, particularly skilled in using narrative to give voice to patient experience, bringing content alive through poetry, stories and games.

With a passion for nursing education, Kerry has transformed traditionally "dry" theory courses into vibrant, engaging learning experiences. Kerry designs innovative teaching methods such as real-time simulations, role plays, and tactile, sensory learning activities. She describes her approach, “The space between myself and ākonga is precious, a relationship based on mutual respect and active co-creation.” Her students love the games and collaborative poetry she creates that foster deep critical thinking and emotional connection.

“Everybody absolutely adores Kerry,” comments one student, “She makes me want to come to every class … helps me stay focused with amazing stories”. Her commitment to equitable learning outcomes is demonstrated through her use of tikanga Māori, as well as her advocacy for Māori and Pacific learners.

Kerry's leadership in aged care education has reshaped attitudes toward the field, and engaged learners. Her work has had a real impact on students, colleagues, and the broader nursing profession. A colleague comments, “Kerry is an excellent communicator, creating a unique blend of high expectation and professionalism with Manaaki for individual challenges…”
