Exciting future for Ako Aotearoa and new Massey University-led consortium

29 June 2023

The Ako Aotearoa Board Chair, Derek McCormack, is delighted with the success of the Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University-led consortium’s win to host the National Centre for Tertiary Teaching Excellence (NCTTE).

The consortium responded to the Tertiary Education Commission’s earlier call for proposals to host the Centre.

“The consortium led by Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and Te Pūkenga will significantly boost the reach of the NCTTE,” says Mr McCormack. “I wish to acknowledge Vice Chancellor Professor Jan Thomas and Massey’s longstanding support for Ako Aotearoa, having been sole host of the centre since 2013.”

“The Centre’s new three-year contract, commencing on 1 July, signals an exciting future for its work within a changing tertiary education and training environment,” says Tumuaki/Director Helen Lomax.

“The key priorities for the National Centre are to build teaching and educator capability, commission research, to provide advice and to administer the national tertiary teaching awards. With collective guidance and strategic coverage of the consortium, we look forward to realising even greater impact for the key priorities of the sector, including learner success,” says Ms Lomax.

“I also acknowledge Professor Giselle Byrnes, Provost at Massey University, for her leadership of the successful RFP bid. Professor Byrnes is a champion of the work the Centre does across the diversity of the tertiary education and training sector. We are proud to continue our work together and I am excited about working with our consortium partners,” Ms Lomax adds.

The partnership will provide an enormous boost to engaging the sector with Ako Aotearoa’s innovative teaching and learning programmes and resources specifically designed to assist Tertiary Education Organisations with their needs around learner success and building educator capability.
