Success Story

Good progress made on Fiji Higher Education project

30 May 2018 Learner access and pathways, Educational outcomes, Pacific learner success, Strategic Leadership and Change

Progress is swift in phase two of a collaborative project by Ako Aotearoa, Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi and the Fiji Higher Education Commission, to develop new pedagogical approaches to higher education in Fiji.

Following a scoping exercise completed last year, several recommendations were made for developing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) teaching qualifications in Fiji.

Earlier this year, the focus fell strongly onto the development of a new National Qualification (NQ) – the L4 National Certificate in Teaching of TVET.  This is based closely on the New Zealand Adult Learning and Teaching L4 qualification ‘owned’ by Ako Aotearoa.  This has now been written and the NQ is the first teaching qualification listed on the Fiji Qualifications Framework (FQF).

The project’s greatest ally in 2018 has been Mr Viliame Rabici – a local consultant extremely experienced in TVET in Fiji.  He has worked with us and, without his assistance, we would not have made as much progress. We’re very indebted to him. Our regular Zoom meetings across the Pacific have been invaluable.

From 21– 25 May we have been facilitating a Capability Development Workshop with 22 senior staff from about 10 Fijian providers at the Tanoa Hotel in Suva.  This has been an extremely successful exercise with the participants actively engaged and excited by the new learning – especially the Coco (tho-tho) framework that underpins the new qualification.  A weaving exercise had participants presenting their versions of weaving the strands of the framework for TVET in Fiji.

We look forward to updating you on future progress.
