About the New Zealand Literacy and Numeracy Educator Awards
A Tribute to Sector Leaders
The New Zealand Literacy and Numeracy Educator Awards were inspired by contributions of the late Dr Judy Paterson and the late Dr Sue Dymock, whose pioneering work in education has shaped the way literacy and numeracy are taught and understood in Aotearoa.
Dr Judy Paterson – Champion of Numeracy Education
Dr Judy Paterson was a passionate advocate for adult numeracy education, known for her deep commitment to equity and learner empowerment. Her work focused on making mathematics accessible and meaningful, particularly for those who had previously struggled with traditional approaches.
In 1995, Dr Paterson was appointed to design and teach the pre-service secondary mathematics teacher programme. Under her guidance, the programme produced many leading mathematics educators and has since been adopted nationwide.
“Judy was a pivotal figure in my career, drawing me into mathematics education research when I first met her at the University of Auckland in 2012. Her impact on the field and on those she mentored is truly immeasurable.” - Dr Tanya Evans Associate Professor in Mathematics Education, University of Auckland
Dr Sue Dymock – Champion of Literacy and Learning
Dr Sue Dymock was a leading figure in literacy education, with a career dedicated to improving reading and writing outcomes for learners of all ages. She authored numerous books and journal articles on dyslexia and learning disabilities.
In 2016, Dr Dymock was selected as a Fellow of the International Academy of Research in Learning Disabilities, receiving international recognition for her contributions to the scientific understanding of learning disabilities.
Annette Tofaeono, Manako Senior Advisor, was asked to reflect on the impact Dr Sue Dymock had on Literacy in Aotearoa. Annette was proud to share her personal and professional experiences working with Sue, calling her “a mentor, a voice of encouragement and unwavering support”. She spoke of Sue’s innate ability to understand her learning style, by “making the learning feel human”. Annette continued, saying “With the critical mahi we do, we are always mindful of those who came before us and the shoulders we stand on. To me, Dr Sue Dymock is all of these and much more.”
