Maimai aroha - tribute to Professor Angus Hikairo Macfarlane

3 December 2024

HE MAIMAI AROHA KI A AHORANGI ANGUS HIKAIRO MACFARLANE

"Kimihia, rangahaua

Kei hea rā koutou ka ngaro nei?

Aua! Kua riro kei Paerau

Ki te huinga o te kahurangi

Ka oti atu rā koutou e.”

Haere atu rā e te rangatira, Hikairo

Te pūwānanga, te kairangahau manawanui!

Kua roa nei koe e whakaū ana

Kia noho ngātahi ko ngā tikanga Māori

Ki te taha o ērā o tauiwi

Ki roto rā i ngā taumata katoa

O te pūnaha mātauranga o Aotearoa.

Kia aha ai?

Kia mārama ake ai ngā kaiako

Kia angitū hoki ai ngā ākonga Māori.

E kore e warewaretia

Tō menemene, me tō ngākau māhaki

Me i kore ake tāu takoha

Ko wai ka tohu, ko wai ka hua?

Ka pēheatia nei tāua tō iwi Māori.

Hoatu rā e te rangatira

Kāre koe i te haere mokemoke

Whāia rā tēnā o ō tātou pāpā

Arā, a Tā Rōpata ‘Bom’ Gillies

Mōrehu whakamutunga o te Ope Tauā 28

He uri hoki kōrua nō

Ngā waru pū manawa o Te Arawa!

MAIMAI AROHA - TRIBUTE TO PROFESSOR ANGUS HIKAIRO MACFARLANE

“We search in vain
But where have you all gone?
Alas! You are lost unto Paerau
The meeting place of illustrious spirits
As you were destined to be."
Farewell, esteemed one, Angus
Scholar and ardent researcher!
Who for a long time have advocated
To ensure that Māori customs and values
Stand alongside those of non-Māori
At all levels
Of New Zealand’s education system.
And for what reason?
To enlighten the educators
And so, create success for Māori students.

We shall never forget
Your smile and your gentle heart
If it was not for your contribution
Then who can really say?
How your Māori people might have fared.

So go forth, great chief
Your journey is not a lonely one
Pursue our patron
The late Sir Robert Nairn Gillies
Last survivor of the 28th Māori Battalion
You are both indeed offspring
Of the eight beating hearts of Te Arawa!
