The concept of Learner Agency centres on a learner’s ability to take charge of their own learning journey. It recognises that learners can choose what they want to learn, assess their ability to learn it, and determine how to approach the learning process—all while taking personal responsibility for their progress.

In this clip facilitator Dr Damon Whitten explains the importance of knowing how to learn, a fundamental aspect of learner agency.

To help educators apply this essential concept, Ako Aotearoa is running a series of four workshops designed to provide practical skills and strategies for integrating learner agency into teaching practice:

For those who can’t attend these workshops but would like to learn more about learner agency, Ako Aotearoa is offering a free, self-directed Learner Agency Educator Pathway on Pathways Awarua, which includes a wealth of information and resources.

Coming up next month: In May the spotlight will be on Pacific Leadership Principles. Registrations are now open for early bookings.
