Language and literacy skills are essential for building learner confidence and success across all areas of life and learning. Educators play a key role in supporting ākonga to develop the strategies they need to strengthen these capabilities.
To do so successfully, educators need a strong understanding of how language and literacy work, and how to build these capabilities in context.
To support educators in building these skills, Ako Aotearoa and the Manako programme is offering a series of four interactive workshops throughout July, designed to help deepen educators understanding of language and literacy and explore how they can apply these concepts in their teaching practice:
9 July: Making meaning | Activating background knowledge
– This workshop focuses on a key reading comprehension strategy
16 July: Structured literacy | Not just for children
– Explores key components of literacy teaching and how these can build a solid foundation for success
23 July: Creating the ‘write’ environment
– Introduces key aspects of writing instruction and strategies to help learners find their 'writing voice'
30 July: Literacy | The LNAAT reading assessment
– Discusses the LNAAT in the context of supporting learners’ reading skills. How to interpret the results, and knowing what to do to support the learner and where to find resources.
These workshops are ideal for educators in foundation and vocational education and those supporting learners in workplace or community settings.
Participants can register for these workshops individually or take advantage of a 25% discount when registering for all four sessions.
