Embedding te reo Māori and Māori values in teaching practice is essential for creating inclusive, culturally responsive learning environments that reflect Aotearoa New Zealand’s bicultural foundation. When educators intentionally incorporate Māori kupu and principles such as manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, and ako, they affirm the identity, language, and culture of Māori ākonga. These practices benefit all learners, promoting cultural understanding and enhancing engagement and wellbeing.
To support educators into incorporating these practices, Ako Aotearoa is offering a series of four professional development workshops throughout September. Each session focuses on a specific concept or practice, providing practical strategies and insights to help educators confidently embed Māori cultural capability in their teaching.
- 4 September: Embedding tatari (wait time) in your practice
- 11 September: Embedding wānanga (considered and respectful discussion) in your practice
- 18 September: Embedding te reo Māori (the Māori language) in your practice
- 25 September: Embedding wairuatanga (spirituality) in your practice
Participants can register for these workshops individually or redeem a 25% automatic discount when registering for all four sessions.
Extended learning
In addition to these live workshops, participants can also access self-directed content through the Māori Cultural Capability Pathway on Pathways Awarua. This complementary resource allows educators to explore the kaupapa in greater depth and reinforce the practical strategies introduced during the workshops.
