Aims:

The main aims of the project were to:

  • develop a shared resource hub – d*hub
  • present practical resources for teachers working with digital images
  • document, analyse, evaluate, consider and recommend methods for engaging with digital images whilst paying careful attention to the laws of copyright and movements towards open source and creative commons approaches to digital media.

Methodology:

The project methodology involved:

  • drawing on scenarios from student work, the project team review current practice as it applies to the digital image (both still and moving) on- and off-line

Key Findings

The key outcomes from the project included:

  • Part one: development of a Teachers’ Resource which includes a set of posters (also available as separate file) that guide students through decisions that need to be made when using digital images, together with a set of case studies that include a record of real classroom situations and the decisions that were made regarding the risk of copyright infringement and associated areas in the Aotearoa/New Zealand context.
  • Part two: Background Research report which documents, analyses, evaluates, considers and recommends methods for engaging with digital images. It also includes extensive bibliographic data and a glossary for teachers keen to extend their knowledge of the complex frameworks of copyright.

Key Recommendations

The key recommendation from the project was:

Resource applicable for other users | While this work was undertaken in the Art and Design context, the resource will be invaluable to all teachers, learners and anyone who uses or wishes to use digital images in their work.
