Digital literacy training creates new education and employment opportunities for learners

Project Details
A project, undertaken by Victoria University of Wellington, to provide a digital literacy training programme that supports second chance learners’ progress into higher education and employment.
Aims:
The main aims of the project were to:
- foster confidence in learners who have not achieved any qualifications in their earlier schooling
- give learners the skills and self-assurance to go into employment or to go on to higher levels of education.
Methodology:
The project methodology used to evaluate the outcomes of the programme was a pre- and post-online survey conducted with learners. The first survey is completed at training just before graduation and the follow-up is completed 12 to 18 months later.

Key Findings
The key findings from the project were:
- thirty percent of respondents had enrolled in further training, and twenty percent of learners had gained a new job, or promotion in an existing job, at the time of the follow-up
- the increased levels of confidence displayed by the learners as a result of participating in the Computers in Homes and Stepping Up programmes.
Key Recommendations
The key recommendation from the project highlighted the benefits of the Computers in Homes and Stepping Up programmes:
Benefits of the digital literacy programme | The key benefits of this programme are the creation of new education and employment opportunities. The majority of learners either enrol in further training or are successful in getting a new job. The programme also has the added benefit of increasing the learners’ confidence, self-esteem and belief in themselves to achieve academically.
