Reading a tape measure Step 3 | Research-based teaching and learning sequence

Surprisingly, there is little research that directly informs how to support a learner to read a tape measure.

Below is a sequence that aligns with research about how mathematics develops.

  1. Develop personal benchmarks.
  2. Show learners how to read a tape measure (including signal points).
  3. Get learners to say measurements aloud.
  4. Convert between units of measure (cm to mm).
  5. Introduce different measurement tape formats.

This video provides an overview of each of these.
