Project Details
A project completed in 2011, undertaken by Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, to explore, develop, pilot and produce a set of resources to support the learning of social work students in the field.
Aims:
The main aims of the project were to develop resources that:
- are simple and easy to access and use
- are relevant to Aotearoa New Zealand contexts
- include both kaupapa Māori and non-Māori materials
- provide learning activities for field educators who are working with social work students on placement.
Methodology:
The project methodology involved:
- a literature search and collation of existing materials
- feedback, input and small-scale piloting from the reference group of Fieldwork Educators as well as collaboration from the institutions involved
- an evaluative framework, which included student voices, developed for piloting arrangements.

Key Findings
The guidelines for the use of the resources included:
- There is very little material that is designed specifically for students in Aotearoa New Zealand. These activities give educators starting points and ideas of ways to help their students connect with the rich possibilities of their placement.
- Each activity has a page for the educator (orange) and then an activity for the student (blue) to complete. Most should fit nicely into a supervision or practice teaching session – a few are longer. The activities are designed to be useful in a range of settings but they can be adapted to fit different agencies and students.
- The first three activities are better used early in the placement and the rest are in no particular order. Numbers four to nine are all about an aspect of teaching and learning and the last five activities explore some of the core themes of practice. They can be used in any order.
Key Recommendations
The key recommendation from the project is:
Use the resources | Use the resources which provide learning activities for field educators who are working with social work students on placement.
