Tapatoru Awards: Celebrating the Solomon Group’s success

19 November 2021 Supporting learners, Educational outcomes

Ako Aotearoa was privileged to host an online awards ceremony last week to celebrate the success of 25 Solomon Group educators who achieved the Tapatoru Award. Tapatoru is Ako Aotearoa's professional practice framework.

The Solomon Group has worked in partnership with Ako Aotearoa to pilot the Tapatoru. The pilot project was a resounding success, as it has helped lift the educators’ capability in supporting their learners.

Awardees included educators from Northland, Auckland and Rotorua, whose hard work and persistence were celebrated in recognition of the knowledge, practice and values they bring to their teaching.

Educators who achieved the Tapatoru Award commented that "it was an honour and a privilege, an awesome experience and journey, it was engaging and if this is professional development, then we want to do more." Lynette Donohoe (CEO, Solomon Group) spoke of how bridging the gap from industry to teaching is critical for educators. Furthermore, she felt that the Tapatoru meets that need and will be great for the sector.

Lisale Falema’a, from TEC’s Ōritetanga team, acknowledged the determination and achievement of the awardees and said that “the process of upskilling educators in ways that meet their needs is learner success in action” and that the Tapatoru is “a sea change” in building a better system.

Working hard during a very challenging 2021, the Solomon Group has paved the way for this exciting and meaningful new initiative for tertiary educators. The Tapatoru Award supports educators in becoming reflective practitioners and builds on their current knowledge base. It offers a holistic, learner-centred, values-based approach to ensuring the support our learners receive better meets their needs. In addition, it provides a whole-organisation approach to capability building.
