This webinar was presented by Dr Joseph Houghton from the Ministry of Education. It focused on Habit 2: Moana – Know your Pacific learner and context in order to amplify their voices.

Discover how understanding the rich cultural context and lived experiences of Pacific learners can transform your teaching practice. Learn how to build meaningful connections, honour diversity, and amplify the voices of Pacific students in ways that uplift and empower.

About the presenter:

Joseph Houghton is an educator and researcher based in Canterbury, New Zealand, with a strong focus on equity and Pacific success in education. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from Massey University and a PhD exploring the amplification of Pacific voices in secondary schooling. His doctoral work draws on Pacific research frameworks, particularly the tivaevae methodology, to centre cultural knowledge and collective storytelling. Joseph has worked across schools, communities, and government to support pathways for young people. He has whakapapa to the Cook Islands, Tahiti and Europe, and is raising five amazing children with his even more amazing wife, Chelsea.
