About the workshop

This professional learning session offers a brief visual history of Te Tiriti o Waitangi for Tangata Whenua.

It is an interactive, online workshop using video, discussion groups and other interactive activities.

It is delivered by a Māori facilitator in te reo Māori and English.

Topics covered

  • an overview of events leading up to the signing in 1840
  • what the Tiriti says
  • the consequences of colonisation
  • Tiriti-related policy in the tertiary education sector today.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants will have a basic understanding of how Te Tiriti o Waitangi informs current government expectations in the tertiary education sector in relation to decision making, Māori cultural responsiveness and equity. This learning will provide the foundation for other workshops which explore specific aspects of Tiriti applications.

Who is this workshop for?

Māori only, to ensure cultural safety for participants.

This workshop is designed for Māori working in the tertiary sector who are not familiar with why Te Tiriti was written, what it says, what went wrong, and where we are today.

We recommend participation in this workshop prior to others in our Success for Māori Learners range. It is an essential introduction for courses focussing on implementation of Te Tiriti.

A version of the workshop designed for non-Māori is also available.
