Jay Marlowe is in every way a person who “walks the social work talk”. Everything he does is “consultative, collaborative and open to new perspectives.” His teaching is centred on co-creation with students being able to provide teaching moments for their peers, as well as Jay. His work with the Auckland refugee community is of renown and is a significant reason that a number of Auckland-based refugees move into, and stay in tertiary study.

Jay undertakes no mean feat as his teaching draws people from all walks of life. He successfully creates safe spaces to challenge and change oppressive practices. He is more than a teacher; he is a role model showing students “what it means to always be considerate towards others.” His teaching has made a difference to the lives of many students, and by extension the many people they work with on a daily basis. Jay Marlowe’s work is making New Zealand, and the world a better, kinder place to be.
