Understanding and embracing neurodiversity - the natural variation in how people think, learn, and process information is essential for educators who want to create more inclusive learning environments.
Many learners experience the world through a neurodivergent lens and often face challenges not because of their differences, but due to systems and environments that are not designed with their needs in mind.
To support educators in recognising and valuing neurodivergence, Ako Aotearoa is offering a series of four professional development workshops throughout August. Each session will explore practical strategies for supporting neurodivergent ākonga. These workshops will help educators grow their confidence and capability in recognising and valuing neurodivergence, and in making small changes that can have a big impact on learner engagement, equity, and learner success.
- 5 August: Autism | Supporting learner success
- 12 August: Dyspraxia | Supporting learner success

- 26 August: Dyslexia | Fostering metacognitive strategies
Professional Learning and Development Consultant, Annette van Lamoen recently commented on these workshops nearing capacity.
“The Manako team are excited to see that these workshops will be running at capacity. Supporting and uplifting our neurodivergent ākonga remains a top priority for Aotearoa and we are delighted to see this strong interest in our workshops.”
Organisations may also book private sessions tailored to their specific context. Get in touch with us to find out more.
Extended learning
Alongside the live workshops, participants will be able to access self-paced learning materials through the Ako Aotearoa Neurodiversity Educator Pathway on Pathways Awarua. These additional resources offer an opportunity to delve deeper into the learning materials, helping to reinforce and expand on the skills introduced during the workshops.
Coming up next month:
In September the spotlight will be on Māori Cultural Capability with a series of four dedicated workshops.
