Project Details
An 18-month project, undertaken by Massey University Extramural Students’ Society (EXMSS), to develop a student survey (Review It), that builds upon a previous survey Rate it, enabling students to share their experiences of Massey University courses with other students.
Aims:
The project aims were to:
- develop an electronic tool for students to evaluate their learning experiences in different tertiary courses, improving upon the existing Rate It programme
- develop a database of student reflections of their learning experiences and deliver a valuable resource to students in selecting their tertiary courses
Methodology:
The survey questions have been designed specifically to enhance student reflection. They focus on the key aspects that are thought to drive student reflection and engagement. Thematic analysis of student feedback is conducted to inform the moderation process, where all comments are checked and moderated before they are made publicly available.

Key Findings
- Review It is a learner-led course evaluation and provides peer to peer advice for students who are finalising paper choices as they progress through their study.
- Review It encourages reflection of the student’s learning experience focusing on key aspects that drive student reflection and engagement.
- Review It takes student reviews a step further with its paper-specific feedback. Not only does it inform students’ academic choices at paper level, it supplies a real connection between students’ experiences, and the lecturers who are seeking to satisfy both the learning requirements and the students’ desires for a positive learning experience.
- Review it feedback is tracked and is linked with information gathered previously through Rate it. This provides an opportunity to connect with senior managers and lecturing staff and provide specific feedback on courses.
Key Recommendations
Available to other Tertiary Education Institutions | Review It is recommended for use by other Tertiary Education Institutions who can have confidence that the Review It survey will pay dividends in heightened student awareness of their learning experience as well as elevating the quality of its offerings.
