Project Details

A project, led by NZQA and Ako Aotearoa, to develop a set of five case studies that describe a range of tertiary education organisations’ experiences with implementing self-assessment. Case studies developed by Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation, Otago Polytechnic, People Potential, Tūranga Ararua and Eastern Institute of Technology.

Aims:

The case studies are designed to:

  • help other tertiary education organisations reflect on their own experiences and approaches and build or maintain an effective culture of self-assessment
  • provide insights into the way management and staff use self-assessment to improve their educational practice and performance.

Methodology:

Five tertiary education organisations were invited to develop self-assessment case studies focusing on a different theme or aspect of self-assessment.

Key Findings

The findings highlighted:

  • That these case studies were not examples of best practice or ‘how-to’ guides; rather, they present the stories of different organisations’ experiences with self-assessment.
  • That there is no single ‘right’ way to approach self-assessment. Instead, self-assessment needs to be based on and reflect an organisation’s goals, their philosophy, the learners and communities they serve, and the context in which they operate.
  • How self-assessment not only contributes to educational performance but can also be a driver of beneficial organisational change.
  • The key characteristics of the TEOs’ approaches, the benefits they believe they have experienced, the barriers they’ve had to overcome, and some of the key opportunities and success factors that have helped them and their staff engage with self-assessment.

Key Recommendations

Opportunity for other Tertiary Education Organisations | The case studies will assist other Tertiary Education Organisations to develop an effective self-assessment system which management and staff can use to improve their educational practice and performance.
