Comprehension is the essence of reading and a tool for lifelong learning. Most of us need to make meaning from text every single day. In doing so, we use strategies without even being aware of it. Teaching these strategies to learners will greatly enhance their reading comprehension. This workshop focuses on one key reading comprehension strategy, ‘Activating background knowledge’, and how we can support learners to connect their background knowledge, interests and experience with the new learning.

This is a Level 1 (introductory) workshop. No prior knowledge is required.

This workshop is for educators who are looking to enhance their understanding of reading comprehension and the strategies that can be taught.

• The role of comprehension in the reading process. 
• Schema theory. 
• The ‘Activating background knowledge’ reading comprehension strategy.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this workshop you will be able to:

• explain the reading process and where reading comprehension fits in 
• use assessment to identify learners’ reading comprehension needs  
• explain schema theory and the critical role of background knowledge in reading comprehension 
• teach ‘activating background knowledge’ strategies to learners.
