What is Tapatoru?

The Tapatoru Ako Professional Practice Award

Tapatoru is a professional development framework, a reflective practice tool, and a whole-organisation approach to capability building. There is a Tapatoru Individual Award for educators and learning support practitioners, and a Tapatoru Organisation Award for Tertiary Education Organisations.

For a deeper look at the metaphorical model underpinning the Tapatoru, read more about Te Pā Harakeke Tapatoru.

Professional values, professional knowledge and professional practice

Tapatoru has been designed to support the professionalising of the tertiary education sector, and to ensure the continued professional development of the tertiary education workforce. The word Tapatoru means ‘triangle’. It is a holistic, learner-centred framework that incorporates Mātauranga Māori and integrates three dimensions:

  • Professional values: Ō tātou uara - What we value
  • Professional knowledge: Ō tātou mōhiotanga - What we understand
  • Professional practice: Ā tātou mahi - What we do

Our Tapatoru facilitators will work with your staff to ensure they meet the standards for professional values, knowledge and practice that are needed to maximise learner success.
