Senior Academic Staff Member, School of Business Studies, Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology
"My ‘wow’ is transforming the boring."
Amy is passionate about accounting “My ‘wow’ is transforming the boring”. Her enthusiasm is evident in her lifelong journey of learning, starting her teaching career with ‘death by power point’; “I couldn’t shake the feeling that my classes were boring”. Now, a colleague says “She sets the standard for teaching quality in the School of Business” Amy succeeds in her goal of promoting excellence and innovation in her teaching by sharing good practice with faculty where she is open and honest about her own teaching journey.
Amy embraces a culturally responsive pedagogy of teaching. She creates a learning environment “where power is shared, culture counts, learning is interactive, and students and I share the common vision of excellence in outcomes”. She scaffolds students learning by breaking down concepts and using local case studies. One approach is to provide short MP4 summary lectures for students. A former student highlights the benefit of these, “thanks for the videos Amy – I wouldn’t have had a clue without them”
