Course outline

This course takes place online over three weeks and includes three one-hour online Zoom sessions. In total, this course should take an average of 10 hours of learning.

Topics covered 

This course covers:

• assessment design skills
• the qualities of good assessment
• how to apply assessment to the learning outcomes in teaching
• assessment evaluation.

And includes:

• Activities to complete prior to participation in the Zoom sessions.
  The purpose of these activities is to develop the skill base for evaluating assessment activities.
• Participation in online Zoom sessions.
  This is the opportunity to apply learning to your contexts and explores your knowledge with colleagues and the course facilitator.
• Post-Zoom workplace activities that will be used to consolidate learning.
• Participation in online forums throughout the duration of the course. 

The learning outcomes

At the end of this course participants will:

• have a comprehensive understanding of assessment and its framework
• be able to interpret and apply standards of assessment
• use NZQA's "Principles of Assessment" to critically analyse assessment
• refine assessment activities.

Who this course for?

The course is suitable for tertiary teachers wanting an introduction to the assessment principles and practices of and for student learning for both traditional ‘face-to-face’ and ‘online’ deliveries.

It will also be valuable for workplace trainers, moderators or resource developers who are responsible for leading the design, implementation and review of assessments.

About the facilitator

Michael Few

Michael Few has worked for the last three years as Learning Advisor with a focus on research, development and the implementation of contemporary change initiatives. Prior to his current role, Michael was a Programme Leader and taught on the Certificate in Adult Teaching (Advanced) Level 5 qualification in the ITP sector. He was also a Lead Coach for an initiative to improve the success for adult Māori learners, based on Professor Russell Bishop's Te Kotahitanga - Effective Teaching Profile.

Michael’s interests and expertise include professional teacher development in the areas of culturally responsive pedagogy, assessment and the application of technology in teaching. He enjoys working as a mentor and coach to other teaching colleagues.
