Course outline

An online interactive workshop using video, discussion groups and other interactive activities. Delivered by Daniel Tawhai (Ngati Porou) in te reo Māori and English.

Topics covered

This Professional Learning session offers a brief visual history of Te Tiriti o Waitangi for beginners. The content includes:

• an overview of events leading up to the signing in 1840
• what the Tiriti says
• the consequences of colonisation
• Tiriti-related policy in the tertiary education sector today.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants will have a basic understanding of how Te Tiriti o Waitangi informs current government expectations in the tertiary education sector in relation to decision making, Māori cultural responsiveness and equity. This learning will provide the foundation for other workshops which explore specific aspects of Tiriti applications.

Who is this workshop for?

Māori only, to ensure cultural safety for participants.

We recommend participation in this workshop prior to others in our Success for Māori Learners range. It is an essential introduction for courses focussing on implementation of Te Tiriti.

About the facilitator

Kia ora tātou! My name is Daniel Tawhai, and I am from Ngāti Porou and Ngāti Uepohatu, and am currently living in Palmerston North on the lands of Rangitāne and Ngāti Kauwhata with my three children. My masterate study Tūpekepeke: Māori knowledge and practices in Health and Physical Education, examined the perspectives, experiences and aspirations of secondary school HPE teachers, drawing upon Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

I have previously guest-lectured and tutored in the School of Arts, Development and Health Education, College of Education, Massey University. Currently, I am working as a secondary school teacher at a special character Māori secondary school in Palmerston North.
