Project Details

A project, completed in 2010, to produce a set of posters and electronic aids for teachers of adult educators in Aotearoa New Zealand, along with supporting information to explain their design and content. A collaborative project undertaken by Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology and members of the Southern Educational Developers (SED) in South Island Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs).

Aims:

The main aims of the project were to:

  • produce posters that have a distinctive New Zealand quality both visually and philosophically where possible
  • develop posters and electronic aids incorporating taha Māori and Pasifika themes as they relate to teaching teachers of adult learners
  • determine the core messages that educational developers agree underpin teaching and learning principles that should appear on posters and electronic resources specifically designed to support the teaching of adult educators
  • develop posters with a distinctive New Zealand quality that will be useful to adult educators in any higher education environment in New Zealand.

Methodology:

The project methodology involved:

  • a review of the literature to investigate differing concepts of educational design
  • creating approximately 10 posters following extensive discussion among the SED
  • establishing the role of a ‘critical friend’ for the project to provide an independent view of the findings during the later draft stages of the poster development
  • trialling the draft posters with tutors and student teachers from 15 South Island tertiary institutions
  • tutors and student teachers completing questionnaires to provide feedback to modify and improve the draft versions of the posters
  • producing a final set of posters based on the feedback.

Key Findings

The key findings from the project were:

  • Being exposed to core principles about learning can help adult learners engage better within their learning context.
  • There was no evidence from the web-based searches or literature search of anything quite like a set of quotations that would help people who teach teachers. Primary and Secondary schools are well-served with posters and resources, but these are aimed at children. The posters produced by the project are for adults.

Key Recommendations

The key outcomes from the project were:

Posters | The major outcome from the project was a set of colourful posters with a distinctive New Zealand quality designed to support adults to learn, either online or in tertiary classrooms.

Community of practice | Another key outcome from the project was the development of the Southern Educational Developers (SED), a community of practice amongst educational developers in South Island Polytechnics and Institutes of Technology. The project enabled the SED to develop as a group and to share their perspectives of pedagogical issues, particularly when they had to choose the Top 10 messages from over 50 quotations.
