Learn the basics of learner-centred adult teaching including a Te Ao Māori worldview approach to expand your cultural capability.

Course outline

This is a four-week course with online content on Pathways Awarua. It includes three online workshops and a follow-up assessment task.

This course is part of a package of three courses for educators and practitioners who are new to embedding literacy and numeracy. The other two courses are: Getting started | Adult literacy and numeracy and Getting started | Mapping literacy and numeracy demands.

Topics covered

The course covers an introduction to foundational concepts and approaches from:

  • adult learning and teaching
  • Te Ao Māori worldview approaches to learning and teaching

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • describe learner-centred teaching
  • recognise the importance of using prior knowledge, learner agency and motivation
  • discuss and apply the concepts of tuakana-teina, ako, whakapapa, and whanaungatanga.

Who is this course for?

This course is recommended for new vocational education teaching or learning support staff and others seeking to expand their understanding of the basics of adult literacy and numeracy. It’s designed for new and existing practitioners who are not literacy and numeracy specialists and who have no, or limited knowledge of, adult literacy and numeracy.

Course content aligns with the NZCALNE (Voc) qualification at level 5.
