This course will equip workplace LLN tutors with the skills to identify priority learning areas, use assessment results, and design targeted instruction. It covers both literacy and numeracy provision and includes a range of instructional approaches, activities and resources to support ongoing innovation.
Workplace training has been described as ‘the hardest job you ever had’. It’s also possibly the most rewarding and effective form of tutoring.
This course is designed to equip workplace LLN tutors with a process for designing and delivering effective, contextualised provision. This process supports tutors to identify priority learning areas, use assessment results, and design targeted instruction.
This course is part 1 of a two-part series of workshops, designed to be completed consecutively. The first course, ‘Developing professional practice’, develops essential components of workplace professional practice and the second, ‘Extending professional practice’, develops more specialist knowledge. Practitioners can attend the second without the first, but some prior knowledge is expected.
- Identify and write specific workplace language, literacy or numeracy learning outcomes
- Design targeted and sequenced learning plans
- Explore/adapt a range of language, literacy and numeracy strategies to workplace contexts.

Ako Aotearoa ALNACC PLD Courses
Each course consists of a workshop delivered face-to-face or by video conference, followed by an optional four-week online module. The module is in the form of a community of professional learning. It is self-paced and takes a minimum of 1-2 hours of engagement per week.
Participants will have the opportunity to practise and reflect on the new learning and exchange experiences and ideas with each other and the facilitator.
Participants can earn Ako Aotearoa digital badges as evidence of participation and completion of course requirements.
